Affirmations don’t work!

Affirmations Don't Work!

If I had a pound for every time someone has told me that affirmations don’t work I would be a very rich woman indeed.ย

So many say that they are “woo” or fluffy and that they do nothing.

If the affirmations you are, or have been using, are doing nothing for you, then you are using the wrong affirmations.

You see they are not meant to be easy. You don’t just repeat the words over and over and hope they’ll sink in and magically change your life!

And you give up to soon and too easily!

Because I bet the first time you used an affirmation it either felt bland or it brought up all sort of uncomfortable feelings and your brain ran riot trying to disprove what you were telling it.

If it felt meh or even good then it was the wrong affirmation – you don’t need that one, try another one.

The one that brought up the horrible feelings and negative thought cycles?

That is the affirmation you need!

But you ran away because it didn’t feel good and you were told that’s what affirmations do.

You possibly feel lied to and hoodwinked.

You weren’t. You just weren’t told how affirmations are really supposed to work!

they are supposed to bring up all the uncomfortable feelings and negative thoughts because that’s how you know you what you need to work on.

If you use the affirmation, for example, ” I love and approve of myself” and it makes you feel all squirmy and you want to avoid the feelings that come up then you know you have some work to do on loving and approving yourself.ย

You most likely have deep seated beliefs that you are not good enough or that you are unworthy of love or approval.ย

This is what you need to address!

You need to work on loving yourself and seeing your worth and as you do so the affirmation will begin to feel more comfortable and as you repeat it you begin to believe it and it’s worked it’s magic. You can say that you love and approve of yourself because you have done the work and can see how loveable and worthy you are.

That is how affirmations work. They are not a magic wand or spell. They require your willingness to change long held beliefs and thoughts about yourself, by helping you find them in first place.

Meditation is an art as well as a skill.

It differs for everyone, in how you approach it, what works for you on any particular day, what you achieve from your practice.

As well as bringing calm, clarity and relaxation it also enhances your creativity. Guided meditations can help you see the world differently, the words you hear both on a conscious and subconscious level allow you to create different images or visions, or change how you feel or think about something. Listening to the words, letting them wash over you, absorbing them, can open you up to new possibilities.

Writing and recording meditations is also an art. There is skill and precision in knowing when to pause and allow your words or voice a moment to be embodied or to allow any emotions that arise to be processed or to pass. Knowing how much time to give the meditator to achieve a state of relaxation before you address changing a thought or belief or taking them on an empowerment journey is crucial as is bringing them out of the meditative state and back to the present moment.

All artists deserve recognition and reward for their work. You wouldn’t go to an art gallery and presume you can just take a painting or sculpture you like home with you, you know you have to pay for it and you are prepared to do so. You pay for designer clothes and shoes because they endow a certain status upon you and you don’t quibble or shirk from paying the price. You pay to listen to the music you love, either by buying the CD or download or paying for a streaming service.ย ย

ย

This is why I sell my meditations, why I ask you to part with actual money in order to experience them. I value my time, my artistry, the skills and energy it takes to create an experience for you that will change you in some way. Meditations are not just something you listen to once, like the songs, books, films, they can be enjoyed over and over again bringing something different each time. I don’t charge designer fees though as I want my meditations to be accessible to all whatever their financial status as I believe meditation has the power to change your life.

If you are unsure what you are buying and want to know more please do contact me and I will answer your questions, or check out my reels where I have lots of short meditations so you can hear my voice, my words, my intonations and decide if they resonate with you. Because I know that feeling where you find a meditation you think is just right for what you need and a few minutes in the voice grates on you and there are bells and or other irritating sounds that prevent you from achieving a relaxed state. All of my meditations use the same background music, but if you just wanted my voice with no music I can do that easily for you, all you have to do is ask.

ย If you want a meditation to address a particular worry or issue and I don’t have one available, then again ask. All things are possible for those who ask!

Last night I settled down on the sofa with a cup a tea, cat on my knee and Netflix. I don’t normally watch TV during term time as it’s so easy to get sucked into watching just one more episode and staying up way too late and being exhausted the following day. As a consequence I am usually way behind current trends, so forgive me!ย

“YOU” was the series that popped up first and having watched the first two series I thought I’d give it a go. It is dark and hopefully, not lifelike!

I kept being drawn to the fact that Joe, one of the main characters, talked to his son about how he was a different person now, he was trying to be good, to be the best husband and father he could and the changes he’d made or was trying to make were for his son.

And, this my friends, is where Joe is going wrong!

We can’t make lasting changes if we’re making them for others. We feel too much external pressure to be or do something for someone else, the motivation wanes, we feel a greater sense of failure when we don’t achieve what we set out to do. That sets us back and causes resentment.

Real change can only come about when it is driven by you, your needs, wants and desires.

If you are not sure who or what is driving the changes you are trying to make in your life then my book will help you work that out. Link here.

Want to know how you can you change how you feel with just THREE WORDS?

Want to know how you can change the way you feel with Three Words?

So you don’t journal.

So why would you want to start?

And write pages every day!

Well you don’t have to write pages.

In fact you can achieve insights with only a few words.

A few weeks ago I was invited to share an exercise at a wellness hub. I only had 15 minutes to showcase what I do and impart my wisdom to the participants.

Some of them had never used a journal before.

We didn’t have time to talk about how to start or what to write so I took them on a short guided meditation to get them into a space of calm and clarity

ย

then I asked them to think of an expereince over the last few days that had caused them to feel sad, angry upset or any other difficult emotion

ย

then we wrote

ย

๐“๐‡๐‘๐„๐„ ๐–๐Ž๐‘๐ƒ๐’

ย

yes you read that right!

ย

๐“๐‡๐‘๐„๐„ ๐–๐Ž๐‘๐ƒ๐’ that came to them when they allowed themselves to feel into that emotion

ย

whatever three words popped into the heads, no overthinking or analysing.

Once they had their three words, I took them back into meditation where we released the emotions,

ย

we visualised letting go,

ย

we used the paper we had written on

ย

some visualised it burning

ย

some scrunched and tore it up

ย

some were able to just allow the words to float away

ย

others imagined erasing the words.

Then we wrote a single sentence to describe how we felt about the situation now.

I had so many come up to me at end of the session to say how empowering it was to let go of those emotions and that they hadn’t realised they’d held onto them.

ย

One person told me that she realised that the experience she had used during the exercise had unconsciously triggered emotions from past experiences that had nothing to do with her life now but she that she was obviously still holding onto them.
ย

All from ๐“๐‡๐‘๐„๐„ ๐–๐Ž๐‘๐ƒ๐’ and a sentence.

So you don’t need to be a writer to use a journal.

You just need to know how to use your journal as tool of enquiry.

Why do I need to change my relationship with my body?

Why do I need to change my relationship with my body?

A lot of us don’t have the greatest relationship with our bodies.

We eat too much or eat the wrong foods, we drink alcohol, coffee and tea in quantities that harm us. We don’t take enough exercise or we drive ourselves to the brink doing too much. We stay up late at night scrolling social media looking for the answers to our problems.

Of course we don’t do this to punish ourselves or because we intrinsically hate ourselves or because we want to create future health problems.

We do it because we are trying to not to feel, to acknowledge the pain we are in.ย  We don’t want it to resurface, it hurt us and we don’t want experience that hurt again.
ย  ย

Our bodies store the memories and the trauma we have suffered.ย

And the body wants to release the hurt, the trauma, so it triggers an emotion or feeling and even sometimes actual pain in the body.

Most of us don’t want to go through that hurt again so we we stuff it down by distracting ourselves with food, drink, exercise, social media, and so on.

This isย  not a conscious decision, we have developed patterns and habits that have just become automatic. Feel sad? Chocolate will cure it!

Some of us were brought up with food seen as a reward or a special treat or a way to avoid dealing with a problem. Instead teaching us how to deal with our emotions we were taught to avoid them and feed the body.

In time, the body begins to rebel. It really wants you to acknowledge those stored memories and traumas and deal with them. It tries to catch your attention by creating feelings. And we wonder why we can’t shift this feeling, why it keeps coming up? What is wrong with me?

When we think these thoughts often enough they become part of our subconscious, we create negative,ย  anxious and depressive thoughts and we feed them with food, alcohol or drugs because that is what we have been taught.

So how do we change this?

We change it connecting with the body. By quietening the mind and allowing the body to speak. Listening to the body, feeling where those traumas and memories are stored and releasing them.

We reconnect with the body by learning to appreciate it and respect it for the marvellous miracle that it is.ย

We practice gratitude for all that it brings us, and accept its limitations and respect its needs.

We acknowledge that the body knows itself.ย

When we have reconnected with the body on a physical level and learnt to love, accept and respect it, we will find that our habits change. We are no longer reaching for food or drink to quell our feelings, the body trusts us to listen and deal with the emotions it triggers.

We step into our true power when we have linked the body, the mind and the spirit. When we can listen to our body and know intuitively what we need.ย

Maybe!

ย

But probably not!

ย

While some people may experience deep healing with their first Reiki treatment most do not.

ย

Reiki promotes, or in some cases starts the self-healing process, and more sessions are required to keep your energy balanced and the healing process working.

ย

If you think of a problem you’ve had for a while, say a particularly knotty muscle, you know one massage isn’t going be enough to deal with it.

ย

It is the same with Reiki although it works on an energetic level some of the blocks we experience may have been in place for a long time, and some of our ingrained thought processes cause those blockages so it takes a while and a few treatments to work through them.

Reiki is not a religion, it can be a way of life, a path to spiritual awareness.

The system of Reiki works on the idea that we are all connected to the world in more than one way and as such there are four levels of healing:

the physical or the body,

emotional โ€“ your feelings and experiences

mental โ€“ your thoughts and attitudes and

spiritual โ€“ your connection with your higher self, the universe or source.

These are represented by the three diamonds or tandens.

We have our physical body represented by the lower tanden or hara placed about 2cm below the navel, which also represents our feelings of safety, security, and groundedness our Earth Energy.

The upper tanden, sometimes referred to as the third eye, represents our thoughts, our intuition, our creativity our connection to spirit, our Heaven Energy.

The middle tanden also known as the heart chakra represents love, inner peace, gratitude and our connection to others, our connection and awareness that we are not alone but one with the everyone and everything in the universe, this energy is called Oneness.

Healing is becoming whole, uniting all those parts of us, not just healing the physical symptoms but looking at all the elements that led to development of those symptoms.

I do not feel any different, so Reiki doesnโ€™t work!!!

I have heard this a few times. People get up off the treatment couch saying they feel quite relaxed but nothing else.

They were expecting fireworks or at the very least their ailment to be immediately cured. Reiki does not work like that. It is more subtle. It works quietly away in the background. It activates the bodyโ€™s self-healing.

We are more than the body, we are our thoughts, our emotions, and our spiritual side too โ€“ Reiki works on all these levels.

When I was suffering from panic attacks Reiki brought me peace in the moment, but it was a while before I was able to track down what was causing the anxiety and deal with the external problems and then my thoughts around it. Reiki gave me the calmness, the clarity to be able to seek out the causes for the anxiety both external and internal. The panic attacks became less intense and less frequent and then faded out altogether as I dealt with the issues in my life that were the root cause of the stress and anxiety I felt that led to the overthinking which led to panic attacks.

But it is only looking back that I can fully see the process I went through at the time it was far from comfortable. I kept going with the daily self-treatments and monthly Reiki shares, and the occasional treatment from another Reiki practitioners. A few years ago panic attacks were ruling my life, now I could not tell you when I last had one.

Can Reiki connect us?

A few years ago during a Reiki course we were split up into random groups to give each other Reiki.

One of the members of my group had mentioned earlier in the day that she was struggling with a knee injury. She volunteered to receive Reiki first and lay on the treatment couch. As I prepared myself to give her Reiki I noticed the other members of the group make a beeline for her knees. I decided to hang back for a moment to see where I was guided to.

My intuition was telling me to put my hearts above the middle tanden, or heart chakra, the place in our physical body that represents love and our connection not just to other humans but also the universe. As I placed my hands over her heart space I was immediately assailed by visions of soldiers. These were young soldiers and they appeared on a break from duties, they were chatting and laughing and passing around photographs.

I kept my hands above her heart space for the duration of the treatment and saw the same young soldier, dressed in full uniform, marching, then running. At one point I saw him run to a young woman and hug her. He appeared to be somewhere with a hot climate.

At the end of the treatment as we discussed what she had felt said that she felt a lot of heat around her knees and that her knee ached less. I asked her if there were any soldiers in her immediate family, she thought about this for a while but couldn’t come up with an answer. I didn’t pursue it and we continued with the treatments.

A few weeks later, we both turned up to a Reiki share and she asked me if I remembered that I had seen soldiers when giving her Reiki. I said that I did

and she then went on to tell me that her much older brother whom she hadn’t heard from in over twenty years had called her from Australia that evening. He had been in the army as a young man, she had been a child at the time so didn’t see much of him and had forgotten this part of his history.

Was it Reiki that had reconnected them?

Panic attacks…

Ten years ago, I was a depressed anxious mess.

Struggling to get from one moment to the next.

One day I had a panic attack on the bus. I truly thought I was having a heart attack. I didn’t know what to do so I got off the bus and walked the rest of the way, my breathing getting shallower and faster, my chest constricted with pain.

I decided to go the GP. I didn’t get the reassurance I thought I would, instead the GP seemed really concerned and I was sent for a battery of tests. The results trickled in over the next few days, all fine. My heart was in robust health, for my age!

At no time did any medical person suggest a panic attack might have been the cause of my pain, it was only through googling my symptoms that it began to dawn on me that is indeed what it was.

That realisation though seemed only to make matters worse they began to be increasingly frequent, to the point I was afraid to leave the house.

I had the tools to supposedly deal with anxiety, I regularly practised yoga and meditation. But they required concentrating on the breath and trying to focus on and control my breath when I was struggling to breath just increased the feeling of panic, and made my breathing quicker, shallower, I thought I was going to pass out.

Another day on the bus, when I couldn’t get off, I decided to try Reiki. I connected to Reiki and placed my hands lightly on my knees. I began to feel the heat and tingling in my hands that I normally associate with Reiki, concentrating on this and the feel of my of the warmth of my hands on my knees allowed my breathing to return to normal and the panic subsided. I felt a sense of calmness wash over me and almost missed my stop.

Reiki had given me hope, a window into the future.
